Shin Dong-Hyuk: Human Rights Activist from North Korea in Halifax

7:30pm
Thursday March 7 2013

Venue: Scotiabank Auditorium, in Marion McCain Arts and Social Sciences Bldg
Address: 6135 University Avenue
Cost: Free

Shin Dong-Hyuk is the only person known to have escaped from a "total control zone" grade internment camp in North Korea and lived to tell about it. He will be sharing his story with Halifax - don't miss it!

From The Toronto Star:
"Shin Dong-Hyuk was 14 when he heard his mother and his brother plotting their escape from the North Korean prison camp that was the only home he’d ever known. He had been constantly warned that his role was to work hard and obey orders. One of the orders was to report any family members or friends who were planning to do something against the rules. So he told his teacher about the escape plan. The outcome: He was forced to witness the public execution of his mother and brother...Shin is the only person ever born in a Korean prison camp who managed to escape."
Sponsored by the Dalhousie International Development Studies department, Project Camp 14, and the Canadian Association for the Study of International Development (CASID)
