SPEAK OUT! A Discussion about Violence Against Indigenous Women

What: Speak Out! A public forum hosted by Amnesty International on violence against indigenous women.

Where: Halifax North Memorial Library, 2285 Gottingen Street.

When: Thursday, June 4.

Time: 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

* Monica Alemán, president of the International Indigenous Women’s Forum, Nicaragua
* Jennifer Lord, coordinator of the Native Women’s Association of Canada, Ottawa
* Catherine Martin, award winning Mi'kmaw documentarian, Millbrook First Nation

HALIFAX, N.S. – According to the Canadian government, young indigenous women are five times more likely than other women of the same age to die as the result of violence.

On June 4, speakers will gather at the Halifax North Memorial Library for Speak Out!, a public discussion about violence against indigenous women.

Speakers will include Monica Aleman, president of the International Indigenous Women’s Forum from Nicaragua and program director of MADRE, Jennifer Lord, coordinator of the Sisters in Spirit initiative with the Native Women’s Association of Canada, and Catherine Martin, an award winning Mi'kmaw documentarian and writer from Millbrook First Nation.

Discussion will focus on what is happening around the issue of violence against indigenous women internationally, nationally, and locally, as well as what can be done to improve human rights for indigenous women. There will be a question and answer period.

The event is hosted by Amnesty International and CompuCollege/The Eastern College Public Relations Advance Diploma Program.
