Visual Arts Nova Scotia presents a panel/peer discussion which aims to engage in the voices and experiences of woman working in the visual arts across Nova Scotia. Our innovative panelists cover a breadth of career and societal experiences and will provide brief artist talks. CHARLOTTE WILSON-HAMMOND is a visual artist, art advocate, mother, grandmother, and wife living and working on Nova Scotia's Eastern Shore. For the past thirty-five years, Wilson-Hammond has been an active advocate for the Arts, provincially and nationally. She was a founding member of Visual Arts Nova Scotia, Eye Level Gallery and the Nova Scotia Coalition on Arts and Culture. She has served on the Board of Governors of the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Canadian Artists Representation, the Canadian Conference of the Arts. These days Wilson-Hammond is a life governor at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, sits as Chair to the Nova Scotia Talent Trust, and is a board member for the Cultural Federation of Nova Scotia. She is also an elected member of the Royal Canadian Academy of the Arts. In 2004, Wilson-Hammond received the Portia White Prize and established a scholarship for visual arts students.
SARAH MALONEY is an artist who balances her artistic work with her roles as wife and mother of three daughters. As a sculptor Maloney is well known for recreating parts of the human anatomy in a variety of materials, including metal and fibre. Most recently the focus of her work has shifted to an examination of flowers in relation to the social construction of nature and associations of femininity. With a BFA from NSCAD University (1988) and a MFA from the University of Windsor (1994), Maloney has also worked in arts administration as the Coordinator at Gallery Connexion and as Executive Director of the New Brunswick Crafts Council. Her work has been exhibited regionally, nationally and internationally and is held in several collections. She currently teaches part-time in Foundation and Sculpture at NSCAD University.
GARITY CHAPMAN is a visual artist living in Halifax with her partner artist. She graduated from NSCAD with a BFA in 2008. Prior to attending NSCAD, Chapman completed a BA at Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario in Native Studies. During her BFA, Chapman was a member of the NSCAD Feminist Collective. She currently keeps busy with community development and art education initiatives in Halifax, among them is founding the Womens Bike Repair Collective.
