Purcell’s Cove sewer & water study to hear submissions from Clayton Developments and community groups

Contrary to the public's wishes, Clayton development will present its controversial, proposed plans for nearly 400 acres of wilderness surrounding Williams Lake.

Clayton Developments is making a public presentation on Monday, November 19 to HRM’s Community Steering Committee overseeing the sewer and water feasibility study for the Purcell’s Cove area. Several community-based groups are also on the list of presenters at the meeting.

Two recent petitions found that more than 70 per cent of area residents are opposed to extension of sewer and water services. And at HRM’s recent open house on the issue, that opposition was clear among more than 200 residents who attended. Among their many concerns:

• the threat of unwanted development and destruction of a unique wilderness area;

• financial costs that would not be justified by the benefits to resident homeowners;

• disruption due to blasting;

• major traffic increases through an already overburdened Armdale Roundabout; and

• the undermining of the Regional Plan, which for sound fiscal and environmental reasons directs new development to lands within HRM’s existing servicing boundary.

This issue goes far beyond the Purcell’s Cove and Williams Lake areas, impacting all Nova Scotians who commute through the Armdale Roundabout or enjoy swimming, canoeing and fishing in Williams Lake and using the extensive network of biking trails throughout the Backlands.
