Summary
As the Occupy movements dramatized throughout the fall of 2011, our world is increasingly unequal. This talk will center on the country that gave rise to Occupy Wall Street in order to demonstrate the need for an analysis of the long history of US imperialism to more clearly see the connections between the structures of oppression that favor the 1 per cent. Thinking in terms of US imperial history allows us to see how the present is fundamentally shaped by past economic disparity, racial inequality, heteropatriarchal oppression, and a deep interrelation between the realms of foreign and domestic. From this position, we can collectively analyze the extent to which the US example is instructive for the Canadian scene, as well as discuss how thinking through the past can make justice and dignity for all more likely in the near future.
