Halifax Media Co-op Meeting Minutes - May 27, 2009
Present: Felix, Kaley, Hillary, Ryan, Ben, Rhobab
Upcoming stories:
There were a number of story ideas submitted to the thread on the website that require some more in-depth research. It was suggested these stories go out as part of the next call for pitches:
We are currently compiling a list of people who would be interested in regularly contributing so that we can approach specific people to write stories as they come up.
The Tide
There was originally a proposal to put out a new issue of The Tide, the HMC broadsheet, but there are concerns about timeliness and capacity to produce and find funding for this project in advance of the Dominion launch.
Instead, Kaley will design a leaflet to be distributed at the launch that will include samples of the coverage produced locally around the G8 development ministers meeting and promote people getting involved with the media co-op.
Launch
The Halifax launch of the Dominion’s special issue on the G8/G20 will take place Thursday, June 3, at 7 PM at the North Branch Library, 2285 Gottingen St.
Posters were distributed for the launch. There is also a facebook event and an email callout. Spread the word!
Ben has a Halifax Media Co-op banner that he will bring for the launch.
Content Discussion
There were suggestions that the HMC solicit more editorial articles or columns to help regularly produce content.
A focus on mental health issues and disability rights was also suggested.
It was also suggested that content be posted regularly on certain days of the week.
Membership Month
May is Membership Month with the Dominion. The Halifax Media co-op managed to gain 7 sustainers this month so far and there are 2 more potential sustainers.
Broader Goals
There was some interest in planning an HMC visioning session in advance of the Dominion’s Annual General Meeting, which will be happening in July of this year.
Next meeting June 10, 5 -7PM, Dalhousie Women’s Centre, 6286 South Street
