Minutes from Media Coop Meeting in Halifax - March 17

Blog posts reflect the views of their authors.

Present: Hilary, Dave, Erica, Glen, Vivian, Ben

1 ) Skillshare Series

- We discussed using Anchor Archive for the skillshare - is a comfortable space, low cost, fairly accessible and would be available for all three nights we have proposed for the skillshare series. The group agreed that this made sense

- Focus for workshops: every workshop should provide a brief talk on what grassroots journalism is.

- we discussed how to set up the workshop and decided that a 'process-based' workshop would be the most engaging and interesting for the workshop attendees. The idea is to guide people through a story from the idea stage all the way through to the final product interspersing tips on interviewing, sources and writing/filming/editing along the way.

- we also discussed having some basic writer guidelines ready for the first skillshare so that they can be available for people to look at and consider

Task: Vivian + Hilary; Glen and David write up an outline of their workshop for next week's meeting.

Task: Erica agreed to make a poster for the skillshare to be presented at next meeting

Task: Everyone should think of some writing guidelines for next meeting

------> we had a side-discussion on posting articles. There should be a system in place to edit and vet pieces that are going up on the site. We said we should have this system figured out hopefully by the beginning of the workshops

2 ) Fundraiser / Launch for Halifax Media Coop

We discussed whether we should be doing a launch for the media coop before things have been properly set up on the website. Do we wait until we have more solid pieces up before we have an event or do we have the event to draw out people to write for the site?

We discussed whether we should have two separate events ie; a fundraiser and a launch. Doing both might be too energy intensive.

We also discussed the idea of using the Bus Stop Theatre for the fundraiser / launch.

3 ) Getting more sustainers

We need to have more presentations to have more sustainers.

We brainstormed a list of people/groups to give presentations to:
- Shambala Centre (Ben said he'd look into this)
- NDP, Megan Leslie
- Rotary (Erica)
- United, Unitarian Churches (Ben)
- Typographical, newspaper writers union of Nova Scotia (vivian)

-----> we had a side discussion on the optics of having say an NDP politician hosting one of these events. We decided that inviting these types of public figures to events is important but they they shoudn't necessarily be hosting them

4 ) Working groups for website

Hilary gave a brief description of the working group structure and we talked a bit about how this structure will develop and evolve.

Next meeting: Tuesday, March 24th at 4:30, Alter Egos Cafe
