While stateside shoppers were pepper spraying each other, and getting shot at and body slammed by security, this weekend members of Occupy Nova Scotia engaged in the far more peaceful pursuit of giving stuff away. For some it was Black Friday. For others it was Buy Nothing Day. For Halifax's cold and homeless, it was a visit from the newly-formed “shopping cart brigade”, and the gift of socks, mitts, hats, boots, and jackets.
Pushed into action by a steadily-growing pile of donated warm clothing, Occupy Nova Scotia has taken to the streets, and is working hard to ensure no one goes cold in Halifax this winter. Warm clothes are being given out in the downtown core, no strings attached.
The physical space may temporarily elude the movement, but the core values of caring and community would seem to transcend any and all efforts at eviction.
Please enjoy the following audio as we follow the “shopping cart brigade” through the streets of downtown Halifax.
It would be awesome to organize something like this to honour the old, original idea of Boxing Day, where people let go of the things that they didn't need, after getting new things for Christmas.
Absolutely great of Occupy Halifax! Very wonderful to hear the voices too.
I sure hope a home can be found for Occupy soon. The woman who spoke about the support of community was right. A place for people to meet and develop bonds is key to keeping the spirit alive and it helps keep Occupy in the pulic eye, also important because it is so very inspiring for us all.
Thanks so much for your caring and heart, Occupy Halifax.
