I am an artist working with photography and video. My work is situated within a critical approach to the environment and urban development. I am particularly interested in the feelings of alienation, uprooting and dislocation.
I am an aspiring environmental, science, and news journalist. My writing includes spoken word, fiction, and journalism, mostly in English but sometimes in Russian and Hebrew.
I was born in the U.S.S.R, but grew up in the West Bank of Israel/Palestine and occasionally in Brooklyn, NYC. Currently, I'm based in Ottawa where I organize with various coalition, campaigns, and social justice groups. My educational background is in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Guelph.
I'm a poet, activist and community-based educator living in Regina SK with my husband and two teens. My first collection of poems will be published by Thistledown Press in 2010. My nonfiction work has been published in Briarpatch, Canadian Dimension and the Prairie Dog. I am a founder of several community-based organizations and have been involved in several others, both online and offline, over the years. I look forward to being part of this community.
I'm a long-time freelance writer and editor by profession as well as a print and online publication designer. I'm also an environmental and social justice advocate, running grassroots campaigns first in Vancouver and now in Victoria.
I've also researched and written in-depth reports and background papers on environmental issues. I wrote a major one: Oil and Water Don't Mix for the David Suzuki Foundation in Vancouver. This paper provided the factual basis of a successful grassroots campaign to maintain the federal and provincial moratoria on offshore oil and gas development on Canada's West Coast.
Right now, I'm very much into blogging and social network technology. I have two blogs: the somewhat neglected greenpolitics.ca and Dandelion Times on ecocentrism. I also maintain an earlier portfolio web site at stuzog.com.
I've lived in housing co-ops in the past and was active in the co-op movement, which I find to be unfortunately moribund these days. I've always wanted to be part of a media co-operative but have had no opportunity to join one.
I'd like to help start the Victoria Media Co-operative in this city.
I am looking to connect with people who are interested in having real conversations about the erosion of democracy in Canada, the dangers of corporate capitalism and the possibility for a more authentic way of living. I am not an idealist, nor am I completely pessimistic. I believe that through hope, solidarity and action, the possibility of creating, sustaining and protecting a more just society - where all individuals have the right to fully develop their potential - is possible.
I'm just getting started as a freelance journalist, although I've been intrigued by alternative media for more than 10 years. I am currently based in Southern Ecuador. I love radio and worked at CFRU 93.3 FM in Guelph as Spoken Word Coordinator for five years. I've also dabbled in video, enjoy writing and seek out good media collaborations. I make bread; run, hike and dance salsa; like Facebook way more than I ever thought I would; and want to participate in strengthening social movements in Canada during my lifetime.
I moved to Nova Scotia from the US in 1982 to teach computer science and technology. Taught at Acadia and NSCC. Was active in politics in Berkeley, Ca in the sixties and seventies. Worked as assistant editor of a small farmer/labor newsletter in California, "The California Farm Reporter." Have been an active photojournalist -- have two photomurals on the UC Berkeley campus, in books, on line, etc.
