KJIPUKTUK (Halifax) - For the past week or so, urban Haligonians have been treated to the colourful visit of a passing flock of about thirty five Bohemian Waxwings (Bombycilla garrulus). The birds, drawn to the city streets by the late winter possibility of ornamental fruiting trees, consume large amounts of berries and fruits, often double their body weight. The birds do occasionally get drunk off of eating large quantities of frost-fermented fruit.
The Waxwings have a long trip ahead of them towards their far-northern Canadian summer breeding grounds.
