The Backlands Coalition invites all interested Nova Scotians to participate in an afternoon of guided walks and discussions on Saturday, May 3, organized as part of the annual Jane’s Walk events across Canada and around the world. The ‘Backlands 360’ walks aim to raise awareness about the importance of the Backlands, a unique 1,300-hectare urban wilderness area west of the Halifax peninsula and bordered by Purcell’s Cove Road, Williams Lake Road, Herring Cove Road and Powers Pond.

Walks from 1:30 – 3:00 pm, meet at 1 pm at starting points in the Spryfield/Purcell’s Cove area

The Backlands Coalition is offering three short guided walkss wheelchair accessible), to provide participants with the chance to explore different parts of the Backlands:
Walk 1: Piggy's Mountain
Walk 2: Upper McIntosh Run/Colpitt Lake (first part of walk is wheelchair accessible)
Walk 3: Williams Lake & Environs
Meet at 1:00 pm at one of the designated starting points for the three walks. nowledgeable local volunteers will lead the walks from 1:30-3:00 p.m. Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring rain gear and water as well as binoculars and cameras, in case you’d like to share photos with the Backlands Coalition or Jane’s Walk websites.
At the Purcell’s Cove Social Club at 3:30 pm, refreshments will be available at a reasonable cost. The Backlands Coalition will facilitate a short discussion, so participants can share what they saw on the walks and discuss why the Backlands matter to the future of Halifax. The area is currently under intense development pressure.
These walks are organized as part of the annual Jane’s Walk events scheduled for May 2 to 4. Jane’s Walk is a movement of locally led walking tours inspired by Jane Jacobs (1916-2006), a famous Canadian urbanist and activist whose writing championed a fresh, community-based approach to city planning. alking tours held in May each year are led by locals who want to create a space for residents to talk about what matters to them in the places they live, play and work.
