NSCAD Board of Governors Votes to Close Seeds Gallery

On September 28th NSCAD University Board of Governors voted to close Seeds
Gallery, the only non-for-profit commercial art gallery of it’s kind in Canada, on March
31, 2014. This decision was not preceded by any consultation with the students or
alumni who depend on the gallery.

“Seeds is an invaluable part of the fine arts education NSCAD University is renowned
for around the world,” said Sarah Trower, President of SUNSCAD. “It is unacceptable
that there has been no discussion with the community about its fate.”

Seeds Gallery was started by the Student Union at NSCAD (SUNSCAD) to provide a
commercial venue for students and alumni and to enhance the Halifax art community. It
was taken over by the University in 2007 to further provide support for students and be
used at a teaching tool.

“The University has made a series of decisions the have prevented Seeds from being
successful,” said Trower. “One of which was moving down to the port which the student
union officially opposed.”

Students are calling on the Board to reverse its decision and to hold a town hall with
students, faculty, alumni and staff, to determine the future of the Seeds Gallery, as soon
as possible. The students union is also demanding the Nova Scotia Government review
the current university funding formula, which disadvantages NSCAD University.
