Shelter from the Condo Storm

by Justin Ling

Despite below-freezing temperatures, event organizer Jocelyne Tranquilla says that Tent City was a general success.

Originally scheduled for October 16th and 17th, the event was postponed due to heavy rain. Despite the day change, dozens of people gathered in the South Commons to protest what they say is a lack of affordable housing in Halifax.

The event began with a series of speakers, then broke into workshops dealing with other aspects of affordable and social housing, from economics to direct action.

The event included a free BBQ, a locally-scavenged food provided by Food Not Bombs, an open-mic event, and a children's playground.

Although the cold led to some shivering, spirits were generally high and a number of people followed through and stayed in the Commons overnight until breakfast the next morning.
