NS Trade Mission to Israel a "Bad Idea"

The Government has no Business Taking Sides.

by CAJJP

NEWS RELEASE June 4, 2011

Halifax --The NS government's planned trade mission to Israel is a bad idea, a local group told the NDP convention meeting in Halifax today.

Several members of Canadian, Arabs and Jews for a Just Peace (CAJJP) handed out leaflets to delegates attending the provincial NDP gathering at St. Mary's University.

"The provincial government shouldn't be taking sides in Israel until it has reached a just peace with Palestinians, " said CAJJP spokesman Jim Guild.

Such plans ignore Israel’s treatment of its Palestinian citizens and its ongoing illegal occupation of the West Bank, Gaza and the Golan Heights, he said.

"Surely our government is aware of Israel’s appalling violations of human rights in Israel/Palestine. These violations have been documented extensively by the United Nations, international groups such as Amnesty International, as well as Jewish, Christian and Arab civil society organizations inside and outside of Israel."

"It would be shocking and disheartening for the first NDP government of our province to ally itself with the Harper government‘s role as apologist for Israeli violations of international law, " Mr. Guild added.

"At a time when the world community is working to resolve the situation, when even US President Obama has challenged Israel’s policies, Nova Scotia should not be going the other way."

The trade mission of business and academic representatives is planned for October.  Nova Scotia Business Inc. has scheduled a workshop for June 15 for participants (see below).

Doing Business in Israel WorkshopWorld Trade & Convention Centre, Ste 304, HalifaxThis October the Premier of Nova Scotia will lead a delegation of companies and partners to Israel to explore growth opportunities and potential business partnerships between the two regions.

In advance of the mission, Nova Scotia Business Inc. is hosting a workshop for Nova Scotia companies interested in learning more about Israel’s culture, business needs and opportunities.

Nova Scotia and Israel are similar in that they have small populations rooted in strong post-secondary education and are focused on building knowledge-based sectors. Israel has successfully leveraged these shared attributes to create a business culture of innovation, technology, and entrepreneurial thinking.

Key sectors include:

  • Bio science and medical technology
  • Defence, security & aerospace
  • Logistics and infrastructure
  • Clean technology and education

The workshop will feature two guest speakers followed by a Question and Answer period.

Jon Goldberg is Executive Director of the Atlantic Jewish Council and serves the Jewish community both here, in Nova Scotia, and in Israel. Domestically, the Atlantic Jewish Council enhances the quality of Jewish life in Atlantic Canada and promotes the activities of Jewish communities in the Atlantic region.  Internationally the council supports the long-term viability of Israel as a secure and prosperous state.  Mr. Goldberg will provide a brief history of Israel, an overview of Israeli culture and some considerations for doing business in this country.

Jonathan Levy was appointed as Israel’s Consul for Economic Affairs & Trade Commissioner to Canada in 2007. Mr. Levy brings many years of trade relations experience to the Israel Economic Mission in Canada, and has served in various positions within Israel’s Ministry of Industry, Trade & Labour, both in Israel and abroad. Mr. Levy will talk about the Israeli economy and key sectors of opportunity in Israel for Nova Scotia businesses.

Please register online for the workshop by Friday, June 10, 2011.  If you have any questions, please contact Jennifer Dunbar at 902.424.6124.

Time: 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
