ACORN member Jessica Basterache came home to find an eviction notice on the door of her mould- and rat-infested Jackson Rd basement apartment yesterday. She and other ACORN and North Dartmouth community members are rallying to stand against what they believe to be retaliation against her complaints today at 2pm in front of Atlantic Living’s Office on 32 Primrose St in Dartmouth.
“They’re saying I didn’t pay my rent for October and November. That doesn’t make any sense, my caseworker takes care of that for me” Said Basterache. Basterache is receiving a disability allowance from the Department of Community Services, who pays her rent directly to Atlantic Living.
The building she lives in was the subject of a November 30th story in the Halifax Media Cooperative, which detailed the extensive mould, damages to the property and security issues in her building. Basterache has a record of advocating for herself and the people in her building against the successive slumlords who they’ve paid rent to.
“Is this because I complained? I didn’t get notice of a residential tenancies hearing and they haven’t said anything about not getting the rent for those months before now.”
Basterache is a member of ACORN Canada (Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now Canada), a national, independent organization of low- and moderate-income people.
Basterache, other ACORN members and supporters in the community will be rallying today (December 4) at 2pm in front of Atlantic Living’s Office on 32 Primrose in Dartmouth.
