Halifax, NS – Public health care activists and supporters will be greeting Halifax commuters on their way to work and call for public health care to be protected, strengthened and extended. Organized by the Nova Scotia Citizen's Health Care Network, activists will be holding signs by the roadside by the MacDonald Bridge on Friday, April 20th, 2012 from 7:30 am to 9:30 am.
“Shorter wait times and maintaining quality health services requires a strong public system,” says Kyle Buott, Coordinator of the Health Network. “The federal government announced they will be reducing funding for public health care after 2017, yet they seem to have billions lying around for fighter jets and mega-prisons – this is a call to action.”
Activists with signs will line the road to form a jingle that drivers can read as they drive by. The signs will read:
For medication we depend, Medicare we must Extend!
Shorter wait times, fast attention, Medicare we must Strengthen!
Healthcare billing we reject; Medicare we must Protect!
“Provincial Premiers will be meeting in Halifax July 25-27 to continue discussions on the 2014 Health Accords,” says Buott. “The federal government is planning to make significant cuts to public health care, and the provincial governments need to stand up to Stephen Harper and protect public health care.”
