On Friday, October 17, 2014 Nova Scotians will be marking the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty with events in Halifax.

8:30 am – A Community Breakfast at St Matthews United Church, 1479 Barrington Street (at the foot of Spring Garden Rd).
9 am – Panel Discussion after the breakfast with people experiencing poverty about the various issues they face and what can be done to change things for the better. The panel will be followed by a Q & A and an open mic.
This year’s theme is ‘Unfreeze the Rates’, in reference to the provincial government’s freeze on Income Assistance rates. We will be talking about this in the context of respect for those living in poverty, a respect that is often lacking in the way those with power in our society treat those who have little.

We invite you to come meet and listen to your constituents who live in poverty and show your support.
The morning’s event will be followed by a march to Province House, departing from St Matthew’s at 10:30.
These are family-friendly events and are open to all. Anyone who does not wish to participate in the march may still attend the event at St Matthews.

These events are being organized by a coalition of groups engaged in the fight to end poverty in our community, including the Community Advocates Network, the Face of Poverty Consultation, the NSGEU, the Community Society to End Poverty in Nova Scotia, the Nova Scotia Association of Social Workers, the North End Community Health Centre, the Nova Scotia Association for Community Living, the Halifax-Dartmouth and District Labour Council, Adsum for Women and Children and others.

Oct 17th was first marked as the World Day to End Extreme Poverty in 1987, and since 1992 has been declared by the United Nations as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. One key purpose of this day is giving voice to those living in poverty, who so rarely get access to a podium. We believe that it is essential for those living in poverty to be heard. The motto of groups who advocate for disabled persons should be our motto as well: ‘Nothing about us without us.’

We look forward to seeing you on October 17th!
