Tamara Huxtable is a Black Canadian textile artist currently residing in Halifax, Nova Scotia.  Her work focuses on issues of race and identity histories and exposing the present complacency in our society towards these subjects.  She uses the medium of fiber and specifically embroidery to tap into memory, nostalgia and comfort to provide a sort of cushioning for the sometimes difficult themes in her work.  Her work in progress Come Clean, is a growing collection of individual confessions of 'mildly' racist behaviour, cross-stitched onto vintage hankies.  This text-based work is intended to invite viewers to abandon fears they may have about race discussion and perhaps make some confessions of their own.  Tamara has studied in both Vancouver, B.C., and Halifax, where she recently earned a BFA in textiles from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design.  She is planning on entering into Concordia University's Art History masters program in the Fall of 2014 where she will conduct research on contemporary Black Canadian art history.
