Several Halifax area peace and human rights groups will conduct an information picket on Tuesday (Nov. 5) at 11 a.m. against Organic Earth Market (formerly Planet Organic) for selling SodaStream products produced in an illegal Israeli settlement on occupied Palestinian land.

The action is a part of a week of activities across Canada organized by the the newly formed Canadian Boycott Coalition for Justice in Palestine/Israel (CBCJPI).

CBCJPI is made up of eight groups from across the country that are all active in the movement for justice for Palestinians. As a tactic to put pressure on Israel to end its occupation of the West Bank and to acknowledge Palestinian rights, these organizations have come together to raise awareness of Israel’s ongoing crimes against the Palestinians, and to urge Canadians to do their part by boycotting unethical Israeli products.

“We’ve contacted this new retailer (as well the manager of the previous Planet Organic store)  informing them of the unethical sourcing of the SodaStream products, said local organizer Linda Scherzinger.

Neither store was willing to remove these products from their shelves, so we’ll be picketing outside of these stores, urging customers to refrain from purchasing SodaStream ” she said.

Ms. Scherzinger said that SodaStream home beverage carbonating devices are fraudulently labeled as “Made in Israel”, but are in fact produced in an illegal Israeli settlement—outside the internationally-recognized borders of Israel.

She said Israeli companies operating in the West Bank enjoy cheap land and water, confiscated from the Palestinian owners; a captive Palestinian labor force, under severe restrictions of movement and organization; vast tax incentives; and lax regulation of environmental and labor protection laws.

“It is our duty as citizens of the world to stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people in their struggle for justice and self-determination,” said Ms. Scherzinger.
