Gender-based violence and the road to recovery: Women’s Economic Empowerment and Security

An international specialist and Oxfam Canada partner dedicated to ending violence against women is in HalifaxWednesday, Sept. 18 and Thursday, Sept. 17.  Netty Musanhu, Executive Driector of the Musasa Project in Harare, Zimbabwe.

Musanhu has a Masters in Women’s Law from the University of Zimbabwe and is a member of the Anti-Domestic Violence Council, a statutory body created through Zimbabwe’s Domestic Violence Act.  As the Executive Director of the Musasa Project, Musanhu raises awareness on gender violence, offers counselling, shelter and legal services to women survivors and provides information on the link between gender violence and HIV/AIDS.

“We live in a world where one in three women has experienced sexual or physical violence,” says Netty Musanhu. “Violence against women is a global human rights issue and a major obstacle to ending poverty. When women’s voices are heard and they can safely claim their rights, they can effect change in families, communities and entire cultures.”

Ms Musanha will be the guest lecturer at an event, “Abuse is Wrong in Any Family-Know the Law” hosted by the Legal Information Society of Nova Scotia, the Nova Scotia Advisory Council on the Status of Women, and the Government of Nova Scotia. Ms Musanhu’s topic is “Gender-based violence and the road to recovery: Women’s Economic Empowerment and Security”
