Sunday Evening Dialogue Hosted by Brunswick Street United Church

Brunswick Street United Church in Halifax will host a Sunday evening dialogue on February 10th from 6 pm to 7 pm on what the United Church of Canada is learning from First Nations peoples. This dialogue will include topics like the Apology to First Nations people, Residential Schools, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and Idle No More. Everyone is invited to participate.

Because the theme of this short dialogue is what the United Church of Canada is learning from First Nations peoples the faciliator of the discussion will be the Rev’d Dr. Russ Daye, Minister at St. Andrew’s United Church in Halifax. Russ Daye has been working in solidarity work with First Nations peoples since the Burnt Church fisheries crisis, where he was an observer for the Aboriginal Rights Coalition. The St. Andrew’s United Church Minister received his doctorate for work on reconciliation and thus has served on the planning committee for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission event in Halifax. For Russ Daye “the highlight of my work thus far was the five years I served as the Co-Chair of Living into Right Relations Committee for the United Church of Canada.”

Brunswick Street United Church in Halifax has itself learned a great deal from traditions shared by First Nations peoples. The small committed band of 15-20 Christians who gather every Sunday night at 7 pm worship in the sacred circle, use a talking stick for all of its meetings, and share in the leadership of liturgy equally. “This is the most unique and intimate form of worship I have ever experieced” says part-time Minister Kevin Little.

Brunswick Street United wants to open up this discussion to a wider audience so that other people of faith can learn from the United Church of Canada’s experience of humble listening and appreciation. Russ Daye, with his unique skill set of experiences, connections, insight and openness, will help animate this important dialogue and discernment.
