Take Back the Night is a rally and march that aims to give voice to struggles against sexualized violence and to empower survivors. It is a night to push back against a world that tells us not to walk alone in our own neighbourhoods, not to look too queer or show too much skin, not to drink too much or flirt too much or let down our constant vigilance for one second. It is a night to push back against a world in which communities facing sexualized violence are expected to limit their lives in order to eliminate risk, instead of shining the spotlight on perpetrators. On this night, we push back, making space instead for a world that serves us. Where it is unthinkable that one in four women in college has survived a sexual assault in her lifetime, and that the numbers are even higher for trans* and queer communities, for women of colour, and women with disabilities. One where everyone can trust that their boundaries will be respected. Where the night is nothing to be feared.

All are welcome to participate in the rally and march. If you feel that you need this space to take back the night, if you identify as a victim or survivor of sexual violence, or if you feel threatened by sexualized violence, harassment, and/or assault in your community, we invite you to lead the march through the streets of Halifax. If you are attending to support a friend, partner, or family member, or to show that you have our backs in the fight against rape, harassment, and victim-blaming, you are invited to walk with your fellow allies. We ask for your presence as we march not because we need protection or approval as we take to the streets, but because your solidarity is important, and needs to be visible.
