Born January 15th, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia, to parents Reverend Martin Luther King Sr. And Alberta Williams King. MLK attened segragated public schools in Georgia, graduating from high school at the age of 15. He received a B.A. Degree in 1948 from Morehouse College, a distinuished Negro institution of Atlanta, an honor he shares with both his father and grandfather. In 1951, MLK was awarded with a B.D. After studying theological study at Crozer Teological Semiary in Pennsylvania for three years. He was also elected class president of a predominantly white senior class at Crozer.

In 1955, he accepted leadership of the first great Negro nonviolent demonstration in the USA, The Bus Boycott. The boycott lasted 382 days, intending to oppose the city's policy of racial segregation on the public bus systems.The boycott caused crippling financial deficit for the Montgomery transit system, as the black population was the cities primary customers for the transit system at that time. During these days, MLK was arrested, his house was bombed, he was personal abused; but he walked away with his head held high as the leader of the first rank.

The boybott ended on December 21, 1956, the Supreme Court of the United States declared the segregation laws for transit systems unconstitutional.

At the age of 35, MLK was awarded the Nobel Peace Price. He was the youngest man at the time to have received this honor.

On the evening of April 4th, 1968, while standing on the balcony of his motel room in Memphis, he was assassinated by a single bullet.

On his birthday, January 15th, Occupy organizations across the globe will stand together in their respective communities to celebrate the monuments movements and revolutions that have occured in the past century. Martin Luther King Jr, was one of the most inspiring activists in history. MLK promoted the idea of change through non-violent, peaceful,soulful movement. To this day, Martin Luther King Jr. Is held as one of the most important men in history.

 

Occupy Nova Scotia will be taking part this January 15th, by holding a candlelight vigil at 6pm in Grand Parade Square. All are welcome to attend!
