Description

The Nova Scotia College of Art and Design is being squeezed. This fall, pressure has come to bear from the provincial government due to expressed concerns about the school's debt. Howard Windsor, a former government Policy Analyst for the province of Nova Scotia, was recently appointed by the government to examine the future of NSCAD. He was allowed to consider any reorganization imaginable: up to and including the erasing of NSCAD as an independent university. His report was released to the government, but others are still waiting to see it.

In the face of this pressure -- and amidst a vacuum from the school's administration -- students, faculty and other campus workers at NSCAD have come together in defense of the school, gathering support inside and outside. Additionally, they've begun identifying their own solutions to the institution's challenges, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the school's independence and thinking creatively about how to run it better -- or even differently -- amidst shrinking resources.

Through the voices of students and faculty, we elaborate on these and other aspects of the story about the present struggle at NSCAD ...
