Bill 100 was introduced by the Liberal government on Wed., April 22 and promoted as a Bill designed to make universities more accountable. The Bill called “An Act Respecting Accountability and Sustainability of Universities” continues this government’s attack on working people – this time university workers.

Section 8 of Bill 100 rides roughshod over university collective agreements and the Trade Union Act rights of employees by giving unprecedented powers to the universities if they determine they have a “significant operating deficit” and permitting them to initiate a restructuring process to produce a “revitalization plan”. This plan must be approved by the Minister of Labour and Advanced Education for the university to qualify for funding from the Province. Once they enter this process, the University gets broad, sweeping powers with respect to workers’ rights. It can forbid the signing of any collective agreement, ban strikes, and take away the ability of unionized employees to start or continue any grievance that relates in whole or in part to the development of the revitalization plan or process.

This is a joint rally with representatives from the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour (NSFL), Nova Scotia Government & General Employees Union (NSGEU), Association of Nova Scotia University Teachers (ANSUT); Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE 3912); Service Employees International Union (SEIU); and the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS).
