Calgary artist Sharon Stevens will give a talk about the Equinox Vigil in Union Cemetery that she started in 2012, and her insights into the evolving role of the artist in the sacred.

A self described celebrationist, instigator and media artist, Sharon has been an award winning independent video producer since 1989, her arts practice includes community celebrations, performance art, installations, and net-based art.

She brought the idea of a digital memorial wall to Equinox Vigil, inviting people to write messages to the departed, words they wish they’d said, heartfelt thoughts they carry with them, or simply the names of the dead.  Sharon then entered the words into a laptop, and they were projected on the top of The Threshold at Union Cemetery where people were creating their own memorials and tributes to place on a public altar.  We are inspired by each other’s words, and the effect was in a sense an amplification of the presence of the dead in our thoughts and hearts.

This presentation will be of interest to all those interested in reclaiming cultural traditions and the arts in general.
