Documentary screening of “Seeking Netukulimk”, followed by a panel discussion.

Seeking Netukulimk: By Martha Stiegman and Kerry Prosper. Kerry Prosper is a passionate fisher and Mi'kmaq elder, who is teaching his grandchildren how to exercise their treaty rights by fishing eels. But those rights come with sacred responsibilities to care for the land and waters of Mi'kma'ki. “Seeking Netukulimk” is a lyrical exploration of the traditional laws that govern fishing in the Mi'kmaq world, and some of the political battles that have been fought to defend them.

Panelists:

Kerry ProsperPresent Councilor of Paq’tnekek Mi’kmaq First Nations community, research coordinator for the Paq’tnekek First Nation in the Social Research for Sustainable Fisheries project.

Sherry Pictou: Dalhousie PhD student from Bear River First Nation, and a coordinator of the World Forum of Fisher Peoples.

Dr. Fred Metallic: Works for the Listuguj Mi'gmaq Government as a senior policy analyst. Fred is a resident of Listuguj and a lifetime citizen of Gespe’gewa’gi, Mi’gma’gi.

Moderator: Dr. Claudio Aporta - Associate Professor, Marine Affairs Program, Dalhousie University.
