Why Strike Out Homophobia??

Three-quarters of LGBTQ students and 95% of transgender students feel unsafe at school.

6 out of 10 LGBTQ students report being verbally harassed about their sexual orientation.

1 in 4 LGB students are physically harassed about their sexual orientation.

-EGALE's Canadian School Climate Survey.

Homophobia and transphobia are real problems in schools across Nova Scotia. The Youth Project works hard to combat these issues - in addition to support services, community outreach, and safe social spaces for LGBTQ youth, the Youth Project provides many education services:

  • Each year we host over 500 anti-homophobia workshops in classrooms across Nova Scotia, for grades 4-12.
  • We provide professional development opportunities for teachers, youth workers, social workers, and healthcare professionals, and more!
  • We offer resources, guides and materials for making classrooms welcoming for LGBTQ students and teachers.
  • Our Ally Card program connects students with supportive teachers in their school.
  • We continuously support the work of Gay/Straight Alliances with leadership development and a yearly provincial conference.
  • Our workshops are often the ONLY time students get to talk about homophobia and transphobia in the classroom, and how it impacts their lives.

To keep these important services going we need your help! Take part in this super fun bowl-a-thon and raise money for more education! Stand up to homophobia and STRIKE IT OUT!
